Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

Sigmoidoscopy is performed on an out patient basis usually in the doctor's office.

The sigmoidoscope is gently inserted into the rectum. Air is inflated into the bowel so as to distend it and allow for careful examination.

When possible, the exam is continued to 60cm (25 inches). The entire exam usually takes only 5-10 minutes.

Sedation is usually not required for the exam.

Standard Preparation

1. Purchase three (3) fleet Enema (green & white box) at your local pharmacy.
2. Beginning two (2) hours before your appointment, use all three(3) enemas, as directed on the box. TO BE USED RECTALLY.
   Follow the instructions carefully. Complete each enema and have a bowel movement, before starting the next one.
3. There are no diet restrictions, however try not to eat a heavy meal. You are able to eat the day of your appointment.
